What is Aden?

Aden is a streaming TV service that creates channels based on your interests. Aden allows you to personalize your channels based on categories, brands and shows. The service then combines this personalization with the familiarity of cable TV by displaying those channels into a traditional guide. Unlike traditional cable services, you can fast-forward, rewind within a video or move back and forth across the channel without being tied to a specific time. The service currently curates content from official YouTube channels from premium, trusted content programmers. With built-in casting functionality, Aden focuses on the passive viewing experience so you can watch your selected channels on your mobile device or TV while you eat, study, work, text or surf the internet.

How does Aden work?

You first choose across general categories and specific brands and shows to create a personalized guide of curated channels. Once your selections have been made, a guide populates your selections and you can watch what is currently playing on the channel or move forward or backward across the channel to other videos. You can easily adjust your channels to add or remove selections, favorite videos you would like to watch later, again or share, and cast your videos to the TV for a true lean-back experience.

What is the difference between categories, brands and shows?

Channels created by selecting a category will offer broader, general videos from across a variety of brands and shows. They provide the perfect way to watch a variety of videos about a given topic from a variety of perspectives and sources. If you discover content from a brand or show you were not familiar with or found interesting, you could always go to the channels screens and add those particular brand or show channels.

Why do I have to sign up?

Aden offers a variety of ways to sign-up for the service using third-party login services such as Facebook or Apple or by using your email and having a magic link sent to you to confirm and access the service. Signing up allows the service to remember your channel selections and favorites when you return to the app and avoids you having to reselect your channels from scratch. If you delete and reinstall the app, you will have to start from the initial onboarding process. Channels created by brand or show will be more specific and only serve content from that specific brand or show. A brand channel will contain a variety of shows from the same network or publisher and a show channel allows you to watch videos from only that specific show.

Where does Aden’s content come from?

Aden currently curates its content from YouTube. Content is sourced from authorized, official channels of premium, trusted brands across TV networks and traditional and digital publishers. The service focuses on offering content designed for a passive viewing experience that includes news, information (finance, tech, science, weather, sports), food, home, lifestyle, kids, entertainment (unscripted reality, celebrity), and niche interests.

Why does Aden focus on "passive viewing"?

Aden is targeted towards cord cutters who miss the familiarity of the traditional TV experience. The service focuses on the "passive viewing" experience where you can be watching content while doing other things like getting ready, preparing meals, eating, texting, using social media, commuting, working or winding down. "Attention-driven" content like live sports and news is expensive and currently available on traditional cable TV services. Aden offers recent news and sports information and highlights. We hope to be able to add live and breaking news in the near future. "Appointment-driven" content is original, premium content that requires your full attention and engagement. This content is expensive and often not repeatable content - many streaming services are spending billions of dollars creating and offering this content to their subscribers. Aden does not offer this type of content given its focus on the passive-viewing experience.

How are the channels curated?

The service currently uses human curation to select a variety of content from the content owner's official YouTube channels. This includes a variety of format lengths from short to long-form and a combination of older and newer videos.

Can I cast my channels to a TV?

Yes, since Aden is designed for passive viewing, you can use your mobile device to navigate and select the channel you want to watch and use the cast button on the top right of the player to watch on your TV. Aden currently supports Google Chromecast and Apple TV casting.

How do I save videos to watch later or again?

Each channel has a heart icon that makes it easy to favorite a video. These selected videos will appear on the favorites tab and allow you to watch later, re-watch, and share your favorited videos. If a favorited video is no longer available on the service (if the content owner has removed or restricted the video), it may no longer appear in your favorites.

How do I add or delete channels?

Once you have completed the initial onboarding process and are on the main guide, you can always select the channels button on the bottom of the app to add or delete your channel selections from the various categories, brands and shows. Once you have added or deleted channels, simply click back on the guide and your new list will appear.

Can I share content?

You can share content by selecting the share icon on the top right of the video player in the guide screen. You can also share favorited videos by tapping the share icon in the favorites screen.

Is there a search function?

Given the focus on curation and lean-back experience, the service currently does not have a search functionality but is something that will definitely be considered in the future as the service evolves and adds more content.
